It's Not for the Beach

Ever wonder what it feels like to be in an astronaut's suit? Christine found out this summer when she visited the Hagley Museum in Delaware. The museum was celebrating the 40th anniversary of the August, 1969 Apollo space craft landing on the Moon.

Celebrating Washington's Birthday at Peachfield Plantation

On Sunday, February 21, 2010, Olivia and Christine enjoyed a "birthday party" for George Washington at historic Peachfield Plantation in Burlington County, New Jersey. The guest speaker was "John Paul Jones," a re-enactor who gave an interesting talk on the life of the famed Naval captain. Afterwards, "Captain Jones" sliced Washington's birthday cake with his steel sword.

Olivia and Christine also helped the children attending to make tri-corner hats.

Happy birthday to the father of our country!

Eastern Regional Meeting, 2009

Three members of the Elizabeth Haddon Society attended the 2009 Eastern Regional meeting of the C.A.R., held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Christie served as a page (her final year -- she's a pro!), and Olivia sang the National Anthem to open the meeting.

This year's National President, Emily Michelle Falkenstein, introduced the 2009-2010 national theme, "Reflections of Independence." Money raised during the upcoming year will help to rehabilitate the Old Charleston Light, a lighthouse in South Carolina. Olivia and Sarah posed with the lighthouse Emily brought along on her national tour.

Special thanks go to Shelly Castorino for her help preparing for the Eastern Regional meeting.

Patriotic Events, Summer of 2009

On the Fourth of July, Christie and Jackie led the Haddonfield parade, carrying the banner of the local American Legion chapter. Here they are with their mom prior to the parade.

Olivia and her mom served as docents at the Indian King Tavern Museum, the "birthplace of New Jersey." It was in the Indian King Tavern, in 1777, that the New Jersey legislature approved changing the name of New Jersey from "colony" to "state." Olivia served lemonade to more than 250 people who attended the Indian King Open House after the parade.

Olivia and Christie also distributed American flags on Flag Day and participated in a ceremony in King's Court, Haddonfield.

The Name Game

Here is our member Christie, who just happens to have the same name as New Jersey's Republican candidate for governor, Chris Christie. Candidate Christie made a stop in Haddonfield on May 28.

Memorial Day 2009

Four members of the Elizabeth Haddon C.A.R. participated in Memorial Day services in Haddonfield, New Jersey, May 25, 2009. Members were Jackie and Christine, Rachel, and Olivia. Our senior society president, Mrs. Jane Breuer was also present, as was past senior state president, Shelly Castorino.

Olivia placed the flag for veterans of the American Revolution, along with the Haddonfield Chapter D.A.R. regent.

Jackie placed the flag for veterans of the War of 1812.

Christine placed the flag for the veterans of the Civil War, along with Mrs. Breuer of the Hatch Circle, Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Along the parade route, members of the Elizabeth Haddon Society distributed American flags. We handed out more than 250 flags -- we ran out!

Our society thanks the members of American Legion Post 38, Haddonfield, for allowing us to participate in the ceremony.
